After School Club Details

Washington's PTA coordinates a wide variety of after school clubs. Partial scholarships are available to those who qualify for free or reduced lunch, but all scholarship recipients are expected to pay a portion of the class fee. Advance registration is required.

Basketball Club: 3 Point Athletics, After School Hoops (Grades K - 5)

Presented by 3 Point Athletics (formerly called One on One Basketball, Inc.), students have fun learning to become a better basketball player in a safe friendly competition environment. Skilled and experienced basketball instructors conduct a one-hour clinic, once a week, for Washington students in K through fifth grade. These clinics will help each student become a better basketball player through drills, contests, and game competition.

Crafts & Yoga (Grades K - 3)

KIDS HEART YOGA is a new and innovative program that combines playful yoga and the arts.  Each week a new theme is introduced and explored through yoga games, drama, art, and music.

Creative Improv: Mudlark Theater (Grades K - 2)

All the world’s a stage, and all the actors are improvisers! 

This class teaches students how to think on their feet and work with their classmates to tell stories with no script, no direction, no rules (well, some rules).  Improv is about having fun with shared storytelling.

Sketch Comedy: Mudlark Theater (Grades 3 - 5)

Sketch Comedy is the art of condensing humor into short hilarious scenes. 

It’s clear from comedic powerhouses like SNL and Second City to comedians on YouTube and Instagram, that sketch is a comedy staple.  In this class students will learn how tell original stories with unique characters in short, memorable, scenes.

Hebrew Club (Grades K - 5)

Hebrew Club is a innovative, fun and exciting club that engages students on all levels, from no background in Hebrew to fluency in language and literacy. We use a highly acclaimed "Aleph Champ" program, modeled after the Karate motivational system with individualized levels for each student, allowing kids of various levels to be in the same group and see quick progress and feel the excitement and motivation of moving up levels. Hebrew club incorporates crafts, creative activities and fun games.  Hebrew club is a warm, loving and nurturing environment, which every child appreciates after a school day.

Afterschool Circus (Grades: 3 - 5)

Grades 3-5 will work to gain an introduction to Circus Arts, developing a basic skill set while increasing their strength and flexibility. Tumbling, silks, unicycling, juggling, stilt-walking, trapeze and Spanish Web are among the possible skills offered.

Let’s Build It - Engineering (Grades 1 - 5)

This class takes a hands-on approach to engineering, allowing students to directly engage with basic engineering concepts through a variety of fun and educational activities. Students will improve their problem solving, math, and physics skills - all while engaging in exciting building projects. Each trimester-long unit will focus on a specific area of engineering, like flight, bridge building, tower construction, circuits, and waves. The unit will culminate in a testing of students' final projects, and each student will receive an award for their progress during the unit.

LangoChicago - SPANISH (Grades K - 2)

We are ready for another exciting school year at Washington Elementary!! Our language classes provide a fun play-based full immersion environment to learn a second or third language. Students will participate in games, tactile and movement-based challenges that require problem solving skills, build over time and stress communication. Our classes are designed with literacy components to ensure that students not only listen, speak, sing and play in their new language, but begin to read and write as well!

Taekwon-Do (Grades K - 5)

Connelly's Academy School Taekwon-Do program provides young people with long term, professional martial art instruction in a safe, non-competitive environment. Kids have fun while developing focus, strength, character and respect for self and others. All classes will be taught by specially trained and experienced Youth Program Leaders of Connelly’s Academy of Martial Arts.

Jugando con la Ciencia (Playing with Science) (Grades 3 - 4)

Come have fun doing experiments with Hispanic scientists. Discover how interesting and fun science is! Only open to 3rd and 4th-grade students. The club is conducted in Spanish, students must be fluent in Spanish, whether they are TWI (two-way immersion) students or not. The club is free of charge, only the first 24 students that register at the school office will be enrolled. The club will admit 12 girls and 12 boys.

Capoeira (Grades 1 - 5)

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by African slaves who disguised their fighting style with elements of dance, music, and ritualistic movement. Physically, Capoeira involes fast kicks, handstands, cartwheels, and acrobatics. Culturally, Capoeira involves music, dance, and language. There is no other art form like it!

Afterschool tumbling (Grades K - 2)

Grades K-2 will focus on the use of physicality to tell stories. Each week, class begins with a physical warm-up, followed by a theater game. The final half hour is devoted to learning a new circus skill or physical theater exercise.

Chess Scholars Club (Grades K - 5)

No previous knowledge of chess is necessary: players of all levels are welcome. Each class will consist of a fun interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both beginners and experienced participants will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. Children will have an opportunity to test for a Chess Belt® under a unique Chess Scholars system patterned after martial arts belts. There will also be a chess competition with prizes at the end of the session! Each child will receive a participation award and a chess keychain. Maximum of 40 students, grades 1-5, and 10 kindergartners.

Evanston Scholastic Chess Tournaments: A student need not be a Chess club member to participate. Look for updates on tournament dates at www.eschess.org.

Floor Hockey: 3 Point Athletics (Grades K - 5)

Presented by 3 Point Athletics, students have fun learning to become a better hockey player in a safe and friendly competitive environment. These clinics will help each student become a better hockey player through drills, contests and game competition.

Evanston Y.O.U. offers free after school educational and enrichment opportunities for students in grades 3-5.

Traditional clubs that meet occasionally at Washington or off site. Each grade level is led by a different parent leader.

Club Policies & Procedures

• Don't miss the deadline: Please complete all registration forms and submit payment in the PTA Mailbox (front office) by the registration deadline. Allow an extra day if you send the forms/payment in your child's backpack since they're don't always make it to the office on the same day. Once the deadline has passed, students can only be added to a club at the club coordinator's discretion and only if the club has space.
• Morning Clubs: Drop off is at 8 a.m. but please do NOT park in the staff lot even for a quick drop off because it delays the staff. There's no need to come back to school; club instructors dismiss participants outside at 9 a.m.
• Afternoon Clubs: Remind your child the time and place of the club so he or she can go directly to the club after school. Teachers aren't typically available to walk children to clubs at dismissal. Pick up is promptly at 4:45 p.m. Enter through door No. 1, the main school office entrance, pick up your child and sign out with the club leader. Please don't wander around the hallways looking for your child. If you don't pick up your child by 4:55 p.m., club instructors are asked to call your listed "emergency contact" and if they can't be reached, the Evanston police. Repeat offenders may have students dropped from the club with no reimbursement.
• Kindergarten Parents: It's generally best to wait until the Winter Session to sign up for clubs; that way they've had a chance to adjust to the full day of school.
• Behavior Policy: Clubs participants are expected to follow the Washington Ways. If behavior issues arise and are persistent, the club provider will discuss the situation immediately with the parents to determine the best and safest outcome, which may include dismissal from the club without refund. This decision will be made at the discretion of the club provider, not the PTA.
• Scholarship: Families who are eligible for free or reduced lunch can request the scholarship. They must pay at least 50 percent of the club fee for each club they request.
